Northeast Regional Cancer Institute Announces Staff Promotions
The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute’s President, Karen Saunders, recently announced several staffing changes across the organization approved by the Board of Directors.
Ms. Laura Toole, LCSW, of Scranton, was recently promoted to Vice President of Community and Patient Services. Prior to this role, she was the Director of Community and Patient Services. In her new role, she will continue to provide organizational supervision and management of all Community and Patient Services programs and activities, including the Patient Navigation Screening Program, community education, family of survivors programs and special events, and healthcare professional education. Toole has been an employee of the Cancer Institute since 1998. She received master’s degrees in Social Service and in Law and Social Policy from Bryn Mawr School of Social Work and Research in Bryn Mawr, PA. She also received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Bloomsburg University.
Marilyn White, Vice President of Registry Services, of Scranton, will retire on June 30, 2016, after 22 years with the Cancer Institute. Ms. White has over 20 years of experience as a leader implementing a regional cancer registry as well as experience with data management such as coding and abstracting medical records. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Marywood University and post-graduate work in Mathematics from Marywood University. She has been a certified tumor registrar since 1987 and has maintained memberships in the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, National Cancer Registrars Association and Pennsylvania Association of Cancer Registries to the present date. She has also held many chairmanships for both the National Cancer Registrars Association (1997-1998) and the Pennsylvania Association of Cancer Registries (1996-2011). In 1996, she received the Distinguished Member Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Cancer Registrars. Prior to her employment at the Cancer Institute, she served as a data manager and coder and abstractor for the former Mercy Health Partners and was an elementary school teacher locally.
Trudy A. Coleman, Ph.D., CTR, of Avoca, has been hired as the Cancer Program Manager. Dr. Coleman has extensive experience in cancer data collection and retrieval, cancer registry management, registrar training, and education, research design, project management, and data analysis. She was first certified as a Certified Tumor Registrar in 1988 and in 1992 earned a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Scranton. She has managed all aspects of several American College of Surgeons approved hospital registries, including two or more patient care evaluation studies annually. Upon completing her doctorate in Human Development and Health Promotion at Marywood University in 2003, Dr. Coleman was an epidemiologist/data analyst for several ongoing epidemiologic studies. She also worked with Cigna Health and the VA Medical Center and was previously the director of the regional cancer registry at the Cancer Institute from 1995 to 2002.
Carolyn Azzarelli , CTR, of Dunmore, has been promoted to Cancer Registry Supervisor. She is responsible for the organizational supervision and management of the cancer registry staff at the Cancer Institute. She received a medical assistant degree from Keystone College and has been a Certified Tumor Registrar since 2004. Carolyn is a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Cancer Registrars and Nation Cancer Registrars Association. She has been with the Cancer Institute since 1999 and was previously worked with Delta Medix and in the Medical Records Department at the former Mercy Hospital in Scranton.
