Health Survey in NEPA Marcellus Shale Region Beginning
The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, a local nonprofit organization, will be mailing questionnaires to 500 randomly selected local residents in the coming weeks as part of a community health survey in the Marcellus Shale region of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
The survey seeks to document the current health status of residents of Bradford, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Wayne, and Wyoming counties. The data collected will include a wide range of health conditions and behaviors and can be used in comparison to future data. Approximately 50 residents from each county will be asked to complete the written questionnaire providing medical, employment, and residential information.
“By gathering data from representative members of the public, studies such as this help us understand the health of our neighborhoods and develop programs to make where we live safer for our children and grandchildren. It is my hope that the community will be willing to join with us and support this research,” said Dr. Samuel Lesko, Director of Research & Medical Director at the Cancer Institute.
The Northeast Pennsylvania Community Health Survey is being supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.
